One of the best things you can do with your family this summer is take them camping. It’s the epitome of summer. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to turn off your cell phone, dress in sweats all weekend, steal time with your kids and spend the entire day tending to the campfire and cooking meals you don’t get at home.

One of the greatest camp food choices? The pudgy pie! They’re a Midwest campfire tradition, turning basic ingredients into something delicious and cheesy. Whether you’re around a campfire or (for the less adventurous) a backyard bonfire, any meal becomes a family-friendly activity with pudgy pies. It’s as easy as placing your favorite breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert ingredients in a pie iron, locking it closed and then setting it over hot campfire coals until cooked to perfection (when you don’t burn them, of course!).

Add Wisconsin cheese and your pudgy pie combinations are practically endless. You can stick to the basics with a classic ham and cheese, cook up a pizza pie, go beyond with an apple, caramel and fontina dessert pie, or make your own creation with last night’s leftovers.

Whatever your inspiration, making pudgy pies is a fun, creative and delicious way to eat around the fire. Read on for our classic pudgy pie recipe and unique new options to try out on your next camping trip.

Classic Wisconsin Cheese Pudgy Pie

Servings: 1

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon butter

2 slices bread of choice

1/4 cup (2 ounces) Wisconsin cheese of choice, shredded

Cooking Directions:

Butter one side of each bread slice. Place one slice buttered-side-down into pie iron half. Pile cheese on center of slice and top with other slice, keeping buttered-side-up. Clamp pie iron closed. Heat over open fire, warm coals or heated grill, about 3-5 minutes per side. Carefully open pie iron and empty pudgy pie onto heat-safe surface, being careful not to touch hot iron. Wait for pie to cool, about 5 minutes, and enjoy!

Now that you’ve mastered the basics, try experimenting with different combinations of ingredients for new flavors. Here are four new variations we love:
